The 80th Societas Koreana Lecture Meeting was held on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at 5:30 pm in the Press Center Press Club. Around 60 international opinion leaders (diplomats and researchers) gathered to hear Professor Ji-Hyun Ahn (University of Washington Tacoma)’s talk entitled “Mixed-Race Koreans and Multiculturalism in South Korean Popular Media.”
Professor Ahn received a PhD in Media Studies from the University of Texas at Austin in 2013 and is currently an associate professor at the University of Washington Tacoma. In this presentation, she used the increased exposure of mixed-race Koreans to explain how Korean media creates plans for particular groups of people. In particular, the lecture focused on an analysis of celebrities and various television programs and a description of the media’s changing logic when they embrace racial differences. The lecture helped the participants understand the difficulties of racial reconstruction in Korean media.
