The 6th World Congress of Korean Studies was successfully held in the Auditorium and graduate school of the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) with the theme of ‘The Transformation of the Korean Tradition: Past and Present’ from Tuesday September 25th to Wednesday 26th September 2012.

Starting from the key note lecture from emeritus professor Jo Dong-il from Seoul National University, a total of 134 papers from 23 countries were presented and an approximate total of 600 men-days spent, including domestic and overseas Korean scholars and graduate students of Korean Studies participating in the event to maintain the academic exchange in the field of Korean Studies.

In his keynote lecture emeritus professor Jo Dong-il from Seoul National University diagnosed that though Korean Studies were open to the world at present, it is still far from being a genuine exchange contributing to the world, then reflected on the maladies of extremely divided disciplinary studies and proposed a vision for integrated studies so as to ensure global development of Korean studies. He asserted that it is necessary to create a theory that can contribute to the resolution of the anguish of mankind and the crisis diagnosis for world history and bring about a revolution in global learning.

Also, as part of ‘The Next Generation Korean Scholar Dissertation Award’ that supports fostering the next generation scholars, 12 excellent dissertations were examined and awarded: the Academy of Korean Studies President Award was given to Park Hae-jin from the Australian National University (Theme: ‘who would ever remember a loser?: study of South American Agricultural migration led by the Korean government’).

Held every alternate year, the inaugural World Congress of Korean Studies was held in 2002 and it has been held in various places outside Korea. It was significant that as it marked a decade of years for the congress to be held in AKS once again and the congress will continue to be developed as a platform to share a range of discussions and discourses in the fields of domestic and international Korean Studies.
